Talking point 6: FIFA World Cup 2022
Welcome back to my blog, and today I will be talking about all the matches that have taken place these past few days. The knockouts of the World Cup have arrived, and this is where things get intense. So let’s take a deep look into each knockout that has occurred so far.
Netherlands vs USA: 3–1
This match was a relatively straight-foward match. Netherlands have been in decent form this World Cup, while USA have struggled to score goals but managed a narrow 1–0 win against Iran to qualify. The Dutch easily controlled the game, and used opportunities well to score goals or break up USA’s possession. Denzel Dumfries was the standout performer here, assisting 2 and scoring 1 to ensure his nation qualified for the next round. He will definitely be playing for Real Madrid, Manchester United or another massive club in the near future. Meanwhile, the USA can be proud of themselves for making it this far, but must keep one eye to the future and prepare themselves for the 2026 World Cup.
Argentina vs Australia: 2–1
Australia battled hard, but in the end the quality of Messi & Co. was too much to overcome. Messi scored in his 1000th game to show once more why he is one of the best in the world, and ensured Argentina stayed in control throughout the match. Australia fought well but couldn’t do much against a dominant Argentina and were constantly on the back foot and chasing the ball. In the end, we can conclude that while Australia did well to qualify, they still have a long way to go to be a dominant football team.
France vs Poland: 3–1
France were beyond a doubt the winners of the game. They looked spectacular, and Poland could not do much to hold them back. They fought well in the opening minutes, but eventually France broke through and got the lead. Eventually they scored 3 without response before Poland got one back, but it was too late to stage a come back. France will be really fancying their chances this World Cup.
England vs Senegal: 3–0
I attended this match live, and the atmosphere in the stadium was crazy. It was clearly an important match for both sets of fans and teams, but in the end England were a cut above Senegal. Jude Bellingham was the star of the night, creating both first half goals which put England in the driving seat. Simply phenomenal work from England’s midfield ensured England went through to the next round, but they need everyone to put in a shift and be more creative if they want to win against France. Luke Shaw was electric down the left, but Walker needed to venture more and be more creative. In the end, England deserved the win and will need to be even more dominant agianst France.
